David Butler established Butler Cox from scratch, built it into a plc and sold it at a multiple of its listed share value to a giant American corporation. He was instrumental in integrating the Istel division of the Rover Group with AT&T. He also served on the Investment Committee of the United Bank of Kuwait.

He was educated at Mill Hill School and at Keble College, Oxford, where he won an open scholarship in classics. He was the co-founder and Chairman of Butler Cox plc and launched the Butler Cox Foundation, the most successful membership organisation for CIOs ever initiated in Europe.

He was a member of the Roskill Committee which investigated the conduct of serious fraud trials. He is a well-known writer on business and IT; when two IT journals ran rival essay competitions, Butler won them both.
